We have posted about Glassdoor a couple of times now, but haven't mentioned how the site works yet. We thought it would be good to provide a quick overview of the site since it is still relatively new.
Glassdoor is intended to make everything about the job search process more transparent. It is one of those sites where you have to share information in order to get access, but it is highly worth it. As Jaime Petkanics wrote on prepary.com, there are four major areas where Glassdoor can help.
1. Look for jobs
This is one of the more self explanatory points. The big plus of this site as compared to other job search sites is that you can see rankings of the company on a 5 point scale when searching that were submitted by employees that work at the company.
2. Do company research
There is a "Reviews" section that comes directly from employees. You can easily see both the good sides of a company and the bad, kind of like a product review. This is unique from other sites that just have a general overview of a company. Sometimes you need to take these reviews with a grain of salt, though, because people who are most upset with a company are sometimes the ones who most often write the reviews.
3. Salary research
Glassdoor does an amazing job of gathering salary information from employees by job title at each company and showing an average and range at each position. We all know how important it is to do research before going into a salary negotiation and this is the perfect place to start.
4. Interview prep
On this site, people provide exact interview questions that they were asked. This can alleviate some of the concerns you might have the night before an interview knowing the trick questions that they have asked. It also gives you a feel for the types of questions that you might be asked.
